Weather, Wind, and Inflatables Are Not a Good Mix

Why working with a certified, safety-trained inflatable rental company makes all the difference.

Back to Blog

Rental inflatables and inflatable party rentals are great fun for all ages and just about all events. However, you need to make sure you are working with a trusted company like Phantom Entertainment to be sure that all your guests will be safe.

Phantom Entertainment's Safety Credentials

All staff at Phantom Entertainment take safety classes through the State of Pennsylvania and become either AL1 or AL2 Amusement Ride Inspectors. The owner of Phantom Entertainment is not only a PA State AL2 Inspector, but he is also a NAARSO Advanced Level 2 nationally certified inspector and an instructor for the PA State Safety seminar courses.

Wind: The #1 Weather Hazard for Inflatables

Weather conditions, especially wind, must always be on everyone's mind when it comes to inflatables and party rentals. ASTM, a widely known international organization for safety standards, has specific guidelines for the safe use of party inflatables. In general, unless the manufacturer of the inflatable unit states otherwise, an inflatable should never be used in wind speeds greater than 15 mph.

ASTM F2374 — The Standard

ASTM F2374 is the Standard Practice for Design, Manufacture, Operation, and Maintenance of Inflatable Amusement Devices. Section 7.5.5.3 specifically states:

"In the event that the manufacturer of the inflatable amusement device has not specified a maximum allowable wind speed for operations, the owner/operator shall either: (a) Use 15 mph (24 km/h) as the maximum sustained wind speed for operation of the inflatable amusement device."

Why This Matters When Choosing a Rental Company

You should be able to trust your inflatable rental provider and feel comfortable that they are knowledgeable about these standards to ensure your guests have a safe and enjoyable experience. Not every rental company in Pennsylvania holds state inspector certifications or follows ASTM guidelines. When you book with Phantom Entertainment, you're working with a team that is trained, certified, and committed to safety at every event.

If wind speeds rise to unsafe levels during your event, a responsible operator will deflate and secure the equipment — even if it means disappointing guests in the short term. Your guests' safety is always the top priority.

What to Ask Your Rental Provider

  • ✓ Are your staff PA state-certified amusement ride inspectors?
  • ✓ Do you follow ASTM F2374 wind speed guidelines?
  • ✓ Are all units PA state-inspected and fully insured?
  • ✓ Do you monitor weather conditions on the day of the event?
  • ✓ What is your protocol if wind speeds exceed safe limits?
